SageNet Consulting
Community is the least understood part of Web commerce and publishing. Yet it is one of the three keys to a successful online venture - Commerce, Content, Community.
Commerce is generated in a different way on the 'Net. The Internet empowers the customer; with it, s/he becomes more than a mere consumer. A Web site provides a base for the consumer to 1) "talk back," ask for the product, service, or information he wants, 2) interact with fellow users about the product or information provided, and 3) act on the information provided, whether by digging deeper into the site, buying a product on it, or moving on to another site or medium. That puts unprecedented pressure on the vendor or publisher to hold the customer's attention and keep her coming back (please see our November issue on e-commerce and its mention of Hummer Winblad partner J. William Gurley's take on the changing rules).
Commerce is generated through the appeal and usefulness of a product and through the Web site that presents it. Content helps establish a product's appeal and utility, and sometimes - in the case of publishing - content is the product itself. But it is Community that retains customers through interaction.
"Community precedes commerce," McKinsey & Co.'s John Hagel told Wired magazine in its August '97 issue. He elaborates in Net Gain (1997, Harvard Business School Press, Boston) which he co-authored with Arthur Armstrong: "Like every communications network, the Internet is all about establishing and reinforcing connections between people.... By creating strong virtual communities, businesses will be able to build membership audiences and use those audiences to bring in revenues in the form of advertising, transaction fees, and membership fees."
SageNet demystifies community and helps clients create a healthy mix of commerce, content, and community in their Web sites and business strategies. Its team of consultants - representing the depth and breadth of online, journalistic, and business talent - is expert at developing online strategies and building online communities with a special talent for creating communities targeting family audiences. We offer a full range of consulting services - implementation plans, community guidelines, bulletin boards and chat programs, online/e-mail newsletters, and ongoing community management.
SageNet expertise can bring community to your site helping you to secure a loyal and growing audience.
The Site TestTake a look at your site (or Web site plan) - really assess what it's achieving. Is it working? Does it bring the audience you want? Provide a reason to visit - and revisit? A place where a visitor can get involved?
If you responded to any of these questions with an "I don't know" or a "maybe," then it's time to bring a sense of community to your Web site. SageNet looks forward to meeting you....
